The Fool’s Journey: understanding tarot’s Major Arcana
Everyone’s journey through life is unique and personal. We begin in different places, make different choices, and experience things that change how we see the world. But we also share common challenges. We all want to find a place where we belong, we have to keep deciding what matters, we deal with disappointment, and we sometimes have to start again.
The Fool’s Journey walks us through one version of that story. A showcase of the tarot’s 22 Major Arcana cards, from the Fool to the World. Following this journey can help you understand the cards and recognize their themes in your own experiences.
What is the Fool’s Journey?
The Fool’s Journey is a way of interpreting the Major Arcana as a connected story. The Fool is its central character, setting out with curiosity and little experience of what lies ahead. Each card introduces something that changes the Fool. Just like life changes all of us.
The Fool jumps in before even knowing how everything will turn out. There’s possibility in that moment, along with great risk. For you it might be moving somewhere new, falling in love, or trying something you’ve never done before.
Through the Magician, the Fool learns to use the gifts they are given to make things happen. The High Priestess introduces another part of learning, paying attention to what is hidden. What is real but just under the surface.
The Empress brings caring, creativity, and growth. The Emperor introduces structure and boundaries. With the Hierophant, the Fool encounters teachings and traditions that explain how things are done. These influences are a foundation.
Making choices and finding direction
The Lovers brings connection and choices that reveal what the Fool values. Caring about another person makes life richer and decisions more complicated. Choosing one possibility may mean giving up another.
With the Chariot, the Fool commits to a direction. Effort brings progress, and progress builds confidence.
Then Strength asks for something beyond determination. A difficult situation may need patience, courage, or staying calm when blowing up would be easier. The Hermit allows for peace and time to reflect. After listening to others and working toward a goal, the Fool needs to ask whether that goal still feels right.
Meeting what you can’t control
The Wheel of Fortune brings a whirlwind of change. Opportunities appear, plans change, and the Fool discovers that effort and outcome don’t always match.
Justice asks the Fool to consider their choices honestly. What did the Fool choose, and did that choice hurt someone else?
With the Hanged Man, pushing harder stops being useful. A pause allows a different view. Death represents an ending that changes what comes next. Maybe the change needs to be a job, a relationship, a habit, or an expectation that is actually hurting instead of helping.
Temperance is the gradual work of adjusting. The Fool tries things, finds a workable balance, and learns how to live with what has changed.
Facing what keeps you stuck
Experience doesn’t prevent the Fool from repeating the same mistakes. The Devil brings attention to addictions, fears, and habits that make life harder.
The Tower brings a more abrupt disruption. Something the Fool relied on no longer holds. It can be disorienting to have your world crash down around you.
With the Star, hope becomes possible again. There’s room to recover and think about a life, a future that is easier.
Finding clarity and beginning again
The Moon follows with uncertainty. The Fool still has to navigate what they don’t know, including the ways fear can still have a hold on your life.
The Sun brings joy and the freedom to enjoy life again. Judgement invites an honest look back. What has the Fool learned, and how will the Fool make different choices?
The World is the final card, representing the completion of the Fool’s Journey. The Fool made it. They struggled and persevered and made it to the end of the journey. That’s a moment to be celebrated.
Where do you recognize yourself?
You don’t have to find your place on a fixed path. A single card may help you think about one part of your life.
You might be the Fool in a new job while feeling the confidence of the Magician in something you’ve practiced for years. You might need the Hermit’s time to think before making a Lovers choice about what matters most.
Choose a card from the story and consider:
- What part of this experience feels familiar?
- What’s different about my situation?
- What have I learned from facing something like this before?
- What choice is available to me now?
The story offers a starting point. Your circumstances give the reflection its meaning.
